JEE Main 2027 Syllabus & Exam Pattern — Everything You Need to Know

Complete JEE Main 2027 syllabus, exam pattern, marking scheme, session schedule and preparation tips. Understand what NTA will test and how to prepare smarter.

JEE Main is the national engineering entrance exam conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) for admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and as a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced (IIT admission). JEE Main 2027 will be conducted in January 2027 and April 2027 — two sessions. Here is everything you need to know.

JEE Main 2027 — Sessions and Schedule

Session 1: January 2027 (exact dates TBA — typically 3rd week of January)

Session 2: April 2027 (typically 1st–2nd week of April)

Students can appear in one or both sessions. The best score from either session is considered for rank calculation. Most students appear in both to maximise their percentile.

JEE Main Paper 1 — Exam Pattern (B.E./B.Tech)

Mode: Online CBT (Computer Based Test)

Duration: 3 hours (4 hours for PwD candidates)

Subjects: Physics (30 questions), Chemistry (30 questions), Mathematics (30 questions) — total 90 questions, 75 to attempt.

Question types: Section A — 20 MCQ (+4/−1 for each). Section B — 10 numerical value questions (attempt any 5), +4 for correct, no negative marking for Section B.

Total marks: 300 (100 per subject)

Languages: English, Hindi, and 11 regional languages including Kannada.

JEE Main 2027 Syllabus — Physics

The Physics syllabus spans 22 chapters covering Class 11 and 12 topics: Units & Measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work-Energy-Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solids & Liquids, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, Oscillations, Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, EMI, Alternating Currents, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics (Ray + Wave), Dual Nature of Radiation, Atomic Structure, Nuclear Physics, and Semiconductor Devices & Communication Systems.

High-weightage chapters: Electrostatics & Capacitors, Current Electricity, Optics, Mechanics (2 chapters combined), Modern Physics.

JEE Main 2027 Syllabus — Chemistry

Chemistry is split into three categories: Physical Chemistry (Atomic Structure, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Kinetics, Electrochemistry, Solid State, Solutions, Surface Chemistry), Inorganic Chemistry (Periodic Properties, s/p/d/f block elements, Coordination Compounds, Environmental Chemistry), and Organic Chemistry (Basics, Hydrocarbons, Haloalkanes, Alcohols, Carbonyl Compounds, Amines, Biomolecules, Polymers, Everyday Chemistry).

NTA has slightly reduced the JEE Main Chemistry syllabus since 2024 (removed a few topics from the old NCERT syllabus). Always verify against the current official NTA notification.

JEE Main 2027 Syllabus — Mathematics

Mathematics is the most time-intensive subject with 17 chapters: Sets, Relations & Functions, Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations, Sequences & Series, Permutations & Combinations, Binomial Theorem, Matrices & Determinants, Coordinate Geometry (Straight Lines, Circles, Conics), Limits, Continuity & Differentiability, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Vectors, 3D Geometry, Probability, Statistics, Mathematical Reasoning, and Linear Programming.

High-weightage: Calculus (35%), Algebra (25%), Coordinate Geometry (20%).

JEE Main Percentile and Rank

JEE Main does not report raw scores directly for ranking — it uses a percentile system normalised across shifts. A 100 percentile means you are the top scorer of your shift. JEE Main rank is calculated from the best percentile across both sessions. Approximately 11–12 lakh students appear, and top 2.5 lakh (roughly top 22 percentile) qualify for JEE Advanced.

For NIT admission: 97+ percentile for top NITs (Computer Science). 90–95 percentile for other branches.

How to Prepare for JEE Main 2027

Start early (Class 11 is ideal). Build conceptual clarity before attempting shortcuts. NCERT textbooks are the foundation — for Chemistry especially. Solve 30 questions per chapter before moving on. Take full mock tests monthly from Class 11 itself, increasing to weekly in Class 12. Target 90+ in each mock before your exam date.
