NEET 2027 Biology Chapter-Wise Weightage — Botany & Zoology Analysis

Data-driven analysis of NEET Biology chapter-wise weightage from 2018–2025 papers. Which Botany and Zoology chapters carry the most marks? Complete breakdown for NEET 2027 aspirants.

Biology is the most important subject in NEET UG — it carries 360 marks out of 720 (100 questions). Scoring 330+ in Biology is the single most reliable path to a good NEET rank. This article provides a data-driven analysis of chapter-wise weightage in NEET Biology based on 2018–2025 papers (NEET became the sole medical entrance from 2017).

NEET Biology Paper Structure

Biology has two sections: Botany and Zoology, each with 50 questions (attempt 45 from each section — 10 questions with internal choice). Total marks: 360. Marking: +4 correct, −1 wrong.

Both Botany and Zoology are roughly equally weighted — 180 marks each in the full paper. However, some chapters in Zoology (Human Physiology) consistently carry more questions than most Botany chapters.

NEET Botany — Chapter-Wise Weightage Analysis

Plant Physiology (12–15 marks / 3–4 questions): Photosynthesis (Electron transport chain, C3/C4, CAM), Respiration (Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, ETC), Transport in Plants, Mineral Nutrition, Growth & Development. This is the most analytical section of Botany — questions require diagram knowledge and process understanding.

Genetics & Molecular Biology (15–20 marks / 4–5 questions): Mendel's laws, Chromosomal theory, Molecular basis of inheritance (DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene expression), Human genome project. These chapters are consistently the highest-yield in Botany.

Reproduction in Plants (8–12 marks / 2–3 questions): Sexual and asexual reproduction, flower structure, double fertilisation, seed development. Diagram-heavy — learn all labelled diagrams.

Diversity in Living World (8–12 marks / 2–3 questions): Classification of plants (algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms, angiosperms). Learn characteristic features of each group.

Ecology & Environment (12–16 marks / 3–4 questions): Ecosystem, Organisms & Populations, Biodiversity, Environmental Issues. Ecosystem services, biogeochemical cycles, population interactions — read each line of NCERT carefully.

Biotechnology (8–12 marks / 2–3 questions): Principles (restriction enzymes, vectors, PCR), Applications (Bt crops, golden rice, gene therapy, transgenic animals).

Cell Biology (8–12 marks / 2–3 questions): Cell organelles (structure and function), Cell cycle and cell division (mitosis and meiosis in detail).

NEET Zoology — Chapter-Wise Weightage Analysis

Human Physiology (20–25 marks / 5–6 questions): This is the single highest-yielding chapter cluster in all of NEET Biology. Digestion & Absorption, Breathing & Exchange of Gases, Body Fluids & Circulation, Excretion, Locomotion & Movement, Neural Control, Chemical Coordination (Endocrine System). Master every diagram, every enzyme, every hormone.

Genetics — Zoology chapters (12–16 marks / 3–4 questions): Inheritance patterns, sex determination, pedigree analysis, chromosomal disorders, mutations. Shared with Botany genetics but tested with different examples.

Human Health & Disease (8–12 marks / 2–3 questions): Immunity (innate, acquired, active, passive), Vaccines, diseases (AIDS, cancer, diabetes), drugs and alcohol abuse.

Reproduction — Zoology (8–12 marks / 2–3 questions): Human reproductive system, gametogenesis, fertilisation, embryonic development, reproductive health, contraception, STDs.

Animal Kingdom (8–12 marks / 2–3 questions): Classification of animals — phyla, key features, examples. Questions are largely factual. Make a table: Phylum → Coelom → Symmetry → Features → Examples.

Evolution (8 marks / 2 questions): Origin of life, Darwinism, Modern Synthetic Theory, Hardy-Weinberg principle, adaptive radiation.

Biology in Human Welfare (4–8 marks / 1–2 questions): Microbes in household, industrial, agricultural applications; biocontrol agents.

The Golden Rule of NEET Biology

90% of NEET Biology questions come directly from NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks — including specific sentences, diagram labels, and table entries. Students who read NCERT 5+ times consistently score 300+ in Biology. Do not rely on coaching notes or reference books as the primary source — use them only to supplement NCERT understanding.

High-Efficiency Strategy

Prioritise: Human Physiology (Zoology) → Genetics & Molecular Biology (Botany) → Ecology (Botany) → Plant Physiology → Reproduction → Cell Biology → Animal Kingdom → remaining chapters.

Solve at least 3,000 NEET Biology MCQs from previous year papers. Pattern recognition is crucial — NEET re-tests similar concepts across years with different question framings.
